What Are Neodymium Ring Magnets?

Neodymium ring magnets are rare earth magnets made from neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) with a central hole. This shape allows them to be mounted on shafts, rods, or fasteners while delivering very high magnetic strength in a compact form.

Advantages

  • Exceptional Strength: Neodymium magnets are the strongest commercially available magnets.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of advanced applications.
  • Affordability: Cost-effective due to advancements in manufacturing processes.
  • High Magnetic Properties: Strong holding and magnetic force due to their high remanence and energy product.
  • Hard and Brittle: Prone to chipping and breaking if not handled carefully.
  • Magnetization: Typically (with some exceptions), ring magnets are magnetized through the thickness.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Uncoated magnets may corrode in humid conditions.
  • Temperature Tolerance: Operating temperatures vary by material grade.

Neodymium ring magnets are used in:

  • Modern motors
  • Generators
  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Pumps
  • Sensors
  • High-end loudspeakers
  • High-intensity separators

Frequently Asked Questions

Can neodymium ring magnets be customized?

Yes. Adams Magnetic Products can supply these ring magnets in custom:

  • Outer and inner diameters
  • Thicknesses
  • Magnet grades
  • Coatings and platings
  • Magnetization directions

Custom tolerances and secondary operations can also be supported depending on application requirements.

Neodymium ring magnets are available in a wide range of grades, typically from N35 up to N56, as well as high-temperature grades. Higher grades offer increased magnetic strength, while specialized grades provide better performance at elevated temperatures.

Standard neodymium magnets typically operate up to 80°C (176°F). High-temperature grades can withstand temperatures up to 150°C (300°F), depending on the material and design. Selecting the correct grade is critical for long-term performance.

Common coatings include:

  • Nickel (NiCuNi)
  • Epoxy
  • Zinc

Coatings help protect against corrosion and wear. Adams can help recommend the best option based on your environment and application.

Yes. Neodymium magnets are hard but brittle and can chip or crack if mishandled or allowed to snap together. Proper handling, spacing, and packaging are important during assembly and use.

Absolutely. Ring magnets can be magnetized axially, diametrically, or with custom magnetization patterns depending on the application. Adams works closely with engineers to ensure proper magnetization for optimal performance.

Yes. Adams Magnetic Products offers value-added services including magnet assemblies, bonding, coating selection, testing, and application support to help reduce total system cost and simplify your supply chain.
